The new classroom block at the International Needs Primary School in Kiyindi, Uganda is a real community effort. Children invited their parents and guardians to dig the foundations and in April 2011 more than 125 of them responded with enthusiasm and gusto.
The new classrooms are a direct result of generous donations from the UK. Last year INUK’s staff member Tom Godec swam the English Channel to raise funds for this school. We are now seeing the results of his incredible effort.
Makonge Primary School Kiyindi is about 85km from Kampala, right on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is a beautiful area where fishing is the main economic activity.
International Needs started this primary school to provide an education alternative to the fishing community who are reluctant to send their children to schools.
Over the years the number of children enrolling in our school has increased. Now there are 935 children in the school and overcrowding is a major problem. With these new classrooms it will be possible to keep numbers to a maximum of 60 per class.
By October 2011 the walls were up, but we do not have sufficient funds to complete the classrooms. We hope that more gifts will soon come in so that we can finish this important work.
