Buikwe, Uganda, is a small town about two hours away from the capital Kampala. Three years ago the nearest secondary school was too far away and too costly for most children to get to. For almost all students in Buikwe, education stopped after primary school.
International Needs already provided primary education in the town and ran a vocational training centre as well as a church. Local children attended the school while those who couldn’t get to secondary school had the opportunity to learn skills and trades at the vocational training centre, equipping them to make a living. But what of those who wanted to continue their education?
International Needs, in partnership with Ogilvy, a PR advertising and marketing firm in London, has built a brand new secondary school serving the community of Buikwe.
The young people receive a free education from excellent, committed and fully qualified teachers as well as free meals and medical care, all in a Christian environment. This is possible thanks to the kindness and generosity of our many child sponsors.
The two classroom blocks cater for almost 250 students and a new administration block will serve the school, with offices for the headmaster, teachers and support staff.
The project, named ‘Many Ogilvy Hands’, began in 2009 and has impacted the entire community, giving many more young people the opportunity to attend secondary school. Justus Miwanda, Executive Director of IN Uganda, said, “Three years ago this was a dream. All we had was a hill. Now we have a school and it continues to grow.”
And the dream does continue to grow. The next phase will see more classroom blocks built, raising the capacity of the school to 500… that means 500 lives that will be changed by the work of International Needs, the partnership with Ogilvy and IN’s child sponsors.
